Every year, elementary schools across the country face the same challenge of designing a master schedule. At the high school and middle school level, computer programs help automate the process. But in an elementary school, there are too many fluid choices, variables, wants vs needs, and personal touches to automate. In 2007, I helped design a master schedule for a K-6 elementary school with 850+ students. We created a schedule where each grade-level team of 4-6 classes had 3 or more common planning times (a minor miracle), created large blocks of time for language arts instruction, and evenly distributed the classes between specialists.
